This amazing mom is identifiable like no other. The bridge of her nose near her eyes is bent. It creates an odd bite that is a little crooked. When I first started meditating and watching and interacting with the deer behind my house, she became my first deer joy. She was instantly friendly and interested in me. She was immediately comfortable in my closeness and would eat apple and carrot slices right out of my hand. Naturally, she became one of my favorite painting subjects. She is the matriarch of of a big family and leads with grace, elegance, and calm. She is also a beacon of light. She magnifies how our imperfections are what identify and draw people to us. It's great to be recognized.

This young mom gave birth for the first time this Spring. She is the daughter of the Matriarch I call, "Mama Deer." Yearlings don't always get pregnant during their first "rut" season. Her whole experience made me realize how surprising and unfamiliar "firsts" are. She gave birth in the "people-occupied" front area and did her best to find hiding and safety. As her little fawn began to walk, the mom would return to the area from feeding in the greenbelt and wouldn't be able to find it. One morning she came to my front door looking for help. My neighbor and I helped her look for her fawn, and upon finding it helped her relocate it to the safety and seclusion of the greenbelt. The little ones name is, "Rescue." It is getting bigger and stronger by the day.

This little ones name is, "Rescue." It is grandchild of the Matriarch, "Mama Deer."
It was born on the front yard side of our neighborhood and was relocated to the greenbelt at about 3 weeks old. Rescue has a very young and attentive mom who brings it by to visit and drink from the water trough every couple of days.

This little one is a twin. At about 2 weeks old, the fawns begin moving about a bit. They are still so awkward and unsure how their foreign legs really work. At the first strange noise, they fall in a fervor to the ground, *splat*. Legs splayed all different ways, they are pressed to the earth. Then, slowly their eyes begin to search their surroundings. Next, they start moving their head a bit. Upon lack of all evidence found of danger, they get up again and begin their wobbly journey. If you ever have the chance to watch, do not miss. Your heart will overflow with the same joy and wonder they possess.

The Autumn Equinox is a time of harvest, the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward. It is a time that reminds me of home and country and earth. Growing up in Texas, the Longhorn is a formidable statuesque symbol of majesty and grandeur. There is something messy and transitional about moving from one season to the next. Much of my style of painting is about creating beauty out of seeming chaotic strokes. This movement of "non-linear" lines may also have been birthed from many years of lying face toward the sky on a trampoline, seeing the ever-evolving art in the clouds.

This came out of conversation about doing hard things. A friend of mine and I were talking about the difficulty of making drastic turns in life.
Having mused for a bit about the various forks in the road we had taken, she said, "How do you eat an elephant?"
Which, at first, was revolting. Who on earth would want to eat an elephant? Those beautiful, wise, magnificent creatures. But willing to play along, I said, "I don't know. How?"
"One bite at a time."
We both laughed hysterically, because, when you are talking about hard things...you must laugh.
Later that evening, I was picturing myself as a monkey, contemplating, eating a whole elephant, one...bite...at...a...time...
